A database is a collection of structured data or information that is electronically stored and organized in a software system. A database is controlled by a database management system (DBMS).

A database is used to store any type or large volume of data for easy maintenance and access. We can store any type of data or information into the database, such as text, pictures, videos, music, etc.
Before the invention of the database system, flat files were commonly used for storing data. In the 1970s, Dr. Ted Codd, a computer scientist, invented the relational model for database management while working for IBM. A relational model solves many of the problems caused by flat file systems.
Various types of databases have been developed over the years, including relational databases, object-oriented databases, and ad hoc databases. Each of these databases has its own strengths and weaknesses, as does the way they are designed.
